Design Plan
PURPOSE: To educate college students about the benefits of CrossFit compared to the traditional gym setting; to motivate college students to take an active role in their health.
AUDIENCE: College students
CONTEXT: Informing students about CrossFit in a college classroom and/or college campus. Students will learn how joining a CrossFit gym provides them with a community feel which differs greatly from the traditional gym setting. The members of the CrossFit community help motivate and push you to further your fitness, build relationships, and enhance mental and physical strength to encourage a happy and healthy lifestyle.
STRATEGIES:
Ethos: We will rely on the inspirational stories of how CrossFit has benefited the lives of those struggling to find fitness; for example, T.J. Murphy. Our argument will also include facts about why CrossFit aids college students, specifically, with increasing fitness and doing so in a motivating and inspiring setting which provides instructional training to reduce the risk of potential injuries.
Pathos:We will try to convince the audience that by using CrossFit instead of the traditional gym, they will be far more pleased with their workout experience, gain better and faster results, and make them feel as though it would be the best decision for them to make.
Logos: Provide facts and experiences from credible sources and provide information about where they can go for further research. We will make sure not to hide any possible information from the audience and appeal to why CrossFit would be most logical when one looks at the ultimate goal of going to the gym. CrossFit is an intense program and has potential risks of injury, this is not something we will deny. But explaining to college students that those same potential injuries are even more at risk when working out alone at a gym because you do not have an educated trainer watching over you.
Through using a mixture of these three rhetorical appeals, we hope to prove to students (and others) not just that CrossFit is a good option for working out, but that working out is something that can be done in a quick and enjoyable manner, and will not only improve one's fitness level but one's lifestyle entirely. This is especially important given the rise of obesity among Americans, as well as because many college students might not realize both how important exercise can be, and that it is possible to do a successful workout in a short period of time using whatever resources may be available for them (especially since many college students have limited time and resources to put towards working out).
MEDIUM: We will create a Glogster to provide videos, visuals, and text as an all in one interactive poster board. We will create and print out flyers to pass out to the class filled with benefits, visuals, and a list of CrossFit gyms within the area to get them involved. We will design both of these using the same style with hopes of creating a "brand" for our advocacy project, allowing it to stand out, be recognizable, and appeal interesting towards your average college student. Our flyers will take the form of an advertisement and include a catchy slogan to grab their attention.
ARRANGEMENT: We began with the big idea (fitness) and then focused on the smaller idea with which to acquire fitness (CrossFit). We will use comparisons from the traditional gym setting to the CrossFit setting. We will do this by organizing our argument into separate parts: what CrossFit is, why it is effective, and why it is a better choice for college students over traditional gyms.
COMMUNICATION: We will communicate using an oral presentation accompanied by a visual filled with consistent and bold text and graphics in which will appeal to a younger, college-aged audience.
TESTING: We plan to ask other classmates and friends what their opinions are before and after our presentation, to see if our advocacy is also persuasive towards those against the idea and supportive to those for it.
